ENAR is recruiting a Communications Officer

The Communications Officer will support ENAR’s communications work, in particular by expanding ENAR’s digital and social media presence and impact. Deadline for applications : 18 April 2018.

The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) is the only pan-European anti-racism network that combines advocacy for racial equality and facilitating cooperation among civil society anti-racism actors in Europe. Our long-term vision is for a Europe where there is full equality, solidarity and well-being for all, citizens and residents. Our overall aim is to end structural racism in the European Union and to build structures, institutions and attitudes based on race equality and equal distribution of power, privileges and rights. We specifically work to combat racism and discrimination based on colour, ethnicity, national origin, nationality, religion, culture, language or legal status. Our staff is based in our Secretariat in Brussels and our member organisations work in all EU countries.

Our communications work aims to raise awareness of EU and national policy makers and empower them to take action. Raising our profile as a leading anti-racism network, we focus on strategic media relations, digital and social media platforms, create our own content, visual communications and story-telling. Cooperation and synergies building of ENAR members is crucial to our communications work.

Job profile

The Communications Officer (CO) will be based in Brussels. This is a full-time position. The gross salary is 3,000 € per month, plus benefits.

The Communications Officer will support ENAR’s communications work, in particular by expanding ENAR’s digital and social media presence and impact.

The CO is responsible for developing ENAR’s digital communication, including the website, social media channels and online engagement strategies, under the supervision of the Senior Communication and Press Officer.

The CO will identify opportunities to engage and develop content for ENAR’s digital platforms and social media, as part of an integrated communications strategy.

The CO will also support the Senior Communication and Press Officer in developing and implementing ENAR’s communication strategy and workplan.

The Communications Officer reports to the Senior Communications and Press Officer, and liaises closely with colleagues. No line management duties beyond guiding intern, if applicable.

The CO must have an understanding of integrated communications work and a passion for social media engagement and trends, and want to apply this to promote racial equality and fight racism.

Main responsibilities

Community management
• Support the development, implementation and evaluation of a social media strategy to improve ENAR’s social media presence and engagement.
• Implement a content editorial calendar to manage and plan content.
• Develop content for ENAR’s social media channels. This includes curating and creating innovative, dynamic and strategic content adapted to each platform ; capitalising on relevant news stories or trends ; digital stakeholder mapping and engagement ; and updating the overall presentation of ENAR’s social media outlets.
• Develop and engage our online community, including ensuring follow-up and moderation of user-generated comments, questions and posts on social media channels.
• Measure, analyse and report on effectiveness of social media content and strategy in an effort to maximise results.

Website maintenance and development
• Develop and implement an online content plan, including creating and updating content, images and layout of ENAR’s website.
• Promote content from member organisations through ENAR’s online channels, in collaboration with the Networking Officer.
• Gather and analyse data and monitor traffic to help improve ENAR’s online presence.
• Raise awareness of relevant issues through innovative digital storytelling.

Information management
• Monitor daily news relating to racism, anti-racism, diversity.
• Research information for and compile ENAR’s electronic Weekly Mail.

Other
• Contribute to other communications work as necessary, including designing visuals for social media or other use.
• Take on any task related to the post as deemed necessary and appropriate by the Management team.

Candidate profile

• Educated to university level or equivalent degree or experience – qualification or experience in public relations or communications is desirable
• At least 2 years’ experience in a communication role
• Experience in working with website content management and creating digital content
• Experience maintaining and/or developing a presence on social media and online community management preferably in a professional context
• Understanding and experience of the power of digital communications and how to harness it, and excellent knowledge of the web and social media environment
• Experience of using measurement and analytics tools to assess the performance of online activities
• Design, image and video editing skills are a distinct advantage
• Good understanding of the consequences of racism on individuals and society and of the political debate related to anti-racism and equality
• Good drafting skills
• Fluency in English (speaking and writing), other languages valued
• Experience in working in or with NGOs, or the voluntary sector is desirably
• Ability to be creative with language and to communicate complex ideas clearly and simply to a wide variety of audiences in written, visual and video format
• Good team-player, able to work in a multicultural environment
