26 November 2014: Symposium on equality data collection

ENAR, the Open Society Foundations (OSF) and the Migration Policy Group (MPG) organised a symposium entitled "Promoting Equality: towards a secured and inclusive collection of equality data in Europe" on 26 November in Brussels.

States cannot measure integration and discrimination patterns efficiently without a reliable and comparable set of disaggregated data to assess the situation of groups at risk of discrimination. The lack of relevant equality data collection across the EU means that non-discrimination policies and laws are not implemented as efficiently and cost-effectively as they could if they were better targeted.

This event, gathering representatives of EU Member States, public and private companies, academics, EU institutions, demographers, equality bodies, foundations and non-governmental organisations, raised awareness of the importance of collecting equality data. The European Commission, the EU Fundamental Rights Agency and the Council of Europe Commission against Racism and Intolerance have already highlighted the benefits of equality data to measure discrimination and improve public policies: it is time that national decision makers acknowledge it too.

Our organisations, working together in the frame of the Equality Data Initiative (EDI) project, aim to ensure that Member States collect inclusive, secured and comparable sets of equality data in order to support equality, social inclusion and non-discrimination.
